Marcus DiBernardo

 

Director of Coaching 

 

 

Coach DiBernardo is a featured global soccer coaching educator and consultant, having worked with New York Red Bulls, Major League Soccer, and European Professional Clubs, as well as having his work published by a wide range of professional soccer outlets. Coach DiBernardo specializes in connecting academic theory to practice session design and principles of play while putting it all together into a comprehensive soccer methodology. Coach DiBernardo has written and sold over 60,000 books on soccer coaching, his work has been featured on the worldwide stage on Sirius XMFC's “The Coaching Academy”, the Soccer Coaches Summit, Championship Productions, the Finland Coaches Association, Direct Kick Radio, Soccer Knowledge Conference, Evolve Soccer, and numerous other soccer podcasts and online shows. Coach DiBernardo’s YouTube channel is ranked #12 in the world, his coaching blog is ranked #23 in the world, and the “DiBernardo School of Online Soccer Coaching” is quickly becoming a leader in soccer coaching education. He served as the Cognitive Soccer Specialist for Trainers Magazine in the Netherlands, publishing numerous articles. Coach DiBernardo was the only American Coach to be featured at the “2020 Futbol  Neuroscience Conference”, viewed by coaches from around the world; presenting on developing the soccer brain. He is a five-time National College Coach of the Year, eight-time Northeast Coach of the Year, and ten-time Regional Coach of the Year, winning four National Championships, and appearing in eight National Championship Finals. Coach DiBernardo has developed over 40 College All-Americans, placed over 150 players at the NCAA DI level, and many others in the professional game. He is the current Director of Coaching and Coaching Provider for Scarsdale SC in Westchester NY. Coach DiBernardo holds United Soccer Coaches National, Advanced  National, and Premier Coaching Credentials along with USSF Licenses.

Coach Jonathan Avila 

 

U8 Director & Rec Director 

 

Jonathan Avila oversees the U8 and Rec Program in Scarsdale which is the foundation of the club. A native of Cuenca, Ecuador, Coach Avila grew-up playing locally as a standout player for the New York Cosmos Academy in Queens, NY. After high school Jonathan took his talents to Monroe College in New Rochelle, NY to play under Head Coach DiBernardo where he led the Mustangs to the National Championship Final in 2014. Coach Avila graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration and later added a Master’s in Business to his accomplishments. 

 

After his college playing career, Jonathan immediately started his journey as a coach, joining the college coaching staff with Coach DiBernardo.  Coach Avila proved to be a natural leader and top coach, helping guide both the men’s and women’s programs to multiple National Championships. Jonathan also showed excellent ability with youth players, his soccer experience combined with a great personality made him an instant favorite among the kids. Coach Avila has been an integral part of Scarsdale SC for many years now, helping our young players develop and enjoy the game.

Cole Penny 

​

Cole has over 20 years of playing and coaching experience. Born in the UK, Cole played and coached for Watford FC before moving to the US in 2014, coaching across various clubs in New Jersey until 2016. 

 

From 2016-2021, Cole served as the Director of Coaching & General Manager for SYSC before launching his own coaching company, Every Goal Soccer, providing specialized individual and small group training, as well as camps and skills clinics. Cole holds USSF, FA & UEFA coaching qualifications.

 

Cole returned to SYSC in the summer of 2022 and now works in conjunction with the SYSC board and our coaching provider, Marcus DiBernardo. Cole works behind the scenes on scheduling, communications, future programming and handles the club's relationship with the league. Cole also acts as a liaison for all parents within SYSC. Cole's company, Every Goal Soccer, also provides our SYSC players supplemental training, through various different clinic offerings.
